The summer of 2020 has been unique, challenging, problematic and enjoyable all at the same time. You can even say its been 100 years in the making.
Oddly, I find myself thinking of the classic 1987 comedy, “Trains, Planes & Automobiles” featuring John Candy & Steve Martin. It’s a delightful film in which the desperate and controlling character of Neil (played by Martin) tries to get home to Chicago for Thanksgiving. However, everything goes wrong and travel plans become adventurous.
Sound a little like familiar?
Gone are the trains & planes and automobiles are the transportation vehicle of choice this year. The virus has altered the landscape and while enjoying a biscotti with your morning espresso in Tuscany may have been in the plans, European travel restrictions are in effect.
Last I heard, airline traffic is down 80% from last year. Train usage isn’t much better as the inside of a soda can does’t afford much room to social distance and separate yourself from the herd. This brings us back to the automobile. The family vacation of old is back with a vengeance.
Load up the station wagon and let’s get started!
Okay, some things have changed over the last 30 years. Today, I have a Subaru Outback and I understand some people might say it’s the modern day version of the station wagon. Fair point. My ego will be bruised for a minute or two and then I’ll forgive your cruelty. For economic reality & convenience though, it’s great…. good gas mileage, plenty of cargo space (think camping equipment) and readily available for road trips.
